Meet Tamara Williams!
We’re starting a new process in which you get to know more about your Mavericks. We’re doing a Q and A for each dancer in which you get insight about how company members feel and their personal experiences. This better helps you understand each dancer’s individuality. This month you meet Tamara Williams!
From Maverick Dance Experience Company Members 2011-2012
What’s your name?
Tamara Williams
Where are you from?
Augusta, Georgia
Augusta, Georgia
How long have you been dancing?
Since I was 8 years old.
How did you end up in New York City if you weren’t born here?
Crazy story. In 2006, I auditioned for a dance company in Chicago (I won’t mention the name) and was accepted, however the Artistic Director suggested that I lose 10 pounds before starting. At barely 105lbs, I decided that was not the company for me, so I packed my bags and took a 24 hour train ride to NYC and have been here ever since.
When did you know that dance was something that you wanted to do for a long time?
When I had one of the highest averages in my graduating class and still didn’t want to be a physicist, doctor, or lawyer.
What are your inspirations and influences that affect the way you move?
Life.
What is your definition of a maverick?
Power.
What makes you a maverick?
My experiences in life that I allow to make me stronger. This defines me as a Maverick.
How do you feel while dancing with this company, in rehearsal, and with the other company members?
I feel supported, at times inspired. I feel warmth and empowered.
Tell me something personal that you feel comfortable sharing with others?
I was paralyzed as a child after getting a flu shot.
Stay tuned for the next “Maverick of the Month” update!
